How many refugees are there in the world?
According to the latest UN estimate, there are over 108 million people on the move right now. Unfortunately, things are going the wrong way in many parts of the world. The Danish Refugee Council works in 40 countries to help the world's refugees and displaced people.

More than 1% of the world's population is displaced
In 2022, more than 1% of the world's population was on the move or otherwise displaced from their homes. This is according to data from the UN. A total of 108.4 million as of 2022.
They are fleeing from, among other things:
- Persecution
- Conflict
- Violence
- Human rights violations
The world's refugees come from 5 countries in particular
During 2022, multiple crises forced millions of people to flee their homes. These refugees come from five countries in particular:
- Syria: 6.8 million
- Ukraine: 5.7 million
- Afghanistan: 5.7 million
- Venezuela: 5.5 million
- South Sudan: 2.3 million
Top host countries: Where do the world's refugees live?
In 2022, Turkey was still the country hosting the most refugees. 3.6 million refugees live in Turkey - most of them from Syria. This is followed by Iran with 3.4 and Colombia with 2.5 million displaced Venezuelans.
Pakistan and Uganda are also among the top host nations with 1.7 and 1.5 million refugees respectively. Germany completes the top 6 host countries in 2022. It is home to around 2.1 million. Of these, Syrian refugees and asylum seekers are the largest group.
